Laughter at L’Espalier

05.27.07 | Comment?

Last night my husband and our favorite travel buddies Denise + Frank, all went to a fancy dinner at L’Espalier in Boston. Wow, there must have been something in the food and/or the wine because the 3 of them kept laughing, especially my husband who had red eyes at the end of the night from laughing so hard (also he was crying from laughter, literally!). We all decided to go with the 5-course price fixe menu, the 3 of them got the vintner’s wine pairings and I had the delicious fresh juice pairings (mango, pineapple, tangerine mint, berries, blood orange– so worth the extra cost). I also decided to substitute some of the course items with items from the 3-course side. I started with the chilled watermelon soup with tiger shrimp and creme fraiche. Then we all shared the torchon fois with Irish toast points - I have to say I am not the biggest fois fan but the combo they gave us with the gelee and cherries and irish sweet toast, was amazing, actually one of my favorite dishes last night. Then I had my vermont rabbit with crawfish, lobster ravioli, and fiddleheads with peas and carrots, sooo good, but sort of a winter meal. They gave us a tiny dallop of cantaloupe sorbet with blueberries in a dash of champagne, the we started with the cheeses. Eric was great at giving us things that I could eat since I am 35 weeks preggers. Yummy soft brie-like cheese from Georgia (Jersey cow) was the best with a slight kick to it at the start! The grand dessert was a strawberry compote over shortbread (a little dry) but the chocolate / cream partner next to it was delish. I also loved the cookies at the end, the passionfruit gelee was amazing. This was a fantastic meal, but its so hard to compare to having dinner at Le Gaiac in St. Barths, location makes all the difference!
